Weekly Check-In

The long weekend made this week fly by.

Volunteering

  • 4 hour Crisis Text Line

Charitable Giving

  • $25 – Cincinnati Ballet

Personal Kindness

  • Most of the time I find it much easier to notice when people are kind to me. What was nice about this week is that I got to experience the same kindness from both sides. I had a doctor basically say to me – Don’t be so hard on yourself. Resting is productive. – and then a few days later I got to say the same thing to a friend. As I listened to all the things she’s dealing with and with such grace and then tell me she’s worried she spends too much time playing games on her phone, I could hear it. I could hear the craziness of that statement. I could hear what the doctor was saying to me.

Self Care

  • I signed up for another race (or two). I’ll be doing a 10k and a half marathon in May. I’m excited that my leg is finally healing and I can ease back into running. My dog is probably the most excited about my recovery.

How’d you do this week?

Purple State Challenge – Ohio

purplestate2

#PurpleStateChallenge part two. Ohio is my home state and you’ll see I choose a hometown favorite that I continue to be impressed by.

Cincinnati Ballet

Mission:

“To inspire hope and joy in our community and beyond through the power and passion of dance.”

Why I choose this group:

There are two things that drew me to choosing the Cincinnati Ballet. First, I grew up volunteering and watching this ballet company. I sold nutcrackers and stuffed envelopes and daydreamed about being up on that stage as I twirled around my living room. The second came this past holiday season when the Cincinnati Ballet was the first company to have a special needs dancer in the Nutcracker. Through their Ballet Moves program which partners with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to offer classes to students with Down syndrome and Cerebral Palsey taught by faculty and physical therapists. It’s a heartwarming story about opening the joy of ballet to everyone.

These two things drew me in but after looking a little bit closer it was clearly a fantastic choice. The company has 1 of 5 women artistic directors and has a program to encourage female leadership as well as a young professionals group. They have educational programs including dance classes for all levels and ages, in-school visits, and study guides. Plus they have a world class Ballet company. They show that the arts can be a vital and important part of the community. Ballet is no longer political and brings people together through beauty and joy of movement.

Weekly Check-In

It feels like I got swept into the weekend. I’m in Los Angeles and we had a big storm that was all anyone could talk about and freaked out my dog.

Volunteering

  • 1 hour Crisis Text Line – I got a headache and had to cute my shift short this week.

Charitable Giving

  • $2,000 (not my personal money) – Sesame Workshop

Personal Kindness

  • National Random Acts of Kindness day was Friday! I don’t think I did much more than hold the door open for someone on Friday. But it doesn’t matter the size of your kindness, it matters that you’re kind.

Self Care

  • This week has been about enjoying the time snuggled up with my dog on my feet. I have a 55 lbs dog and she likes to lay her head and sometimes all of her on my feet or legs. As long as my leg isn’t bent the wrong way it’s pretty adorable and cozy.

In-Kindness Donation

Every year my company gives me $2,000 to donate to an organization of my choice as a reward for my volunteer hours from the previous year. Last year, after a lot of debate, I donated to Water.org. One rule I made up is that I won’t donate to an organization that I volunteered for. This year I’ll add that I won’t donate to a Purple State Challenge organization.  But I found this year’s choice to be very easy. It’s an organization I’ve long admired, that is very needed right now but also might not be as on the radar as other organizations. It’s an organization that is working to grow the nations empathy and kindness.

I donated $2,000 to Sesame Workshop!

Mission:

Sesame Workshop’s mission is simple and clear – “to help kids grow smarter, stronger, and kinder.”

“There’s a method to our magic. Grounded in research and guided by our mission, it plays out daily across countries, cultures, and channels.”

For over 40 years they have produced incredible results and had an effect on so many lives including my own. Their simple and clear mission is approached in a complex, thoughtful, and magical way. They are true innovators in early childhood development. And their results are real and well documented.

Why I choose this group:

Like millions I’ve been effected by their first initiative – Sesame Street. I learned letters and numbers. I learned how to be caring and accepting of diversity. It also sparked my interest to learn additional languages (Spanish and American Sign Language). And the Ladybug Picnic Song still makes me smile. I also have a love of all things Muppet.

I think that education is so important. Sesame Workshop focuses on some of the aspects of education I find most important – literacy, emotional intelligence, and social awareness. Not only do they teach these to everyone they reach but they focus on communities in special need including military families, children dealing with loss, and low income children. Their reach is global and they work to make sure that the content matches the audiences needs. Female muppets are incorporated in shows in Bangladeshi, Nigeria, and Egypt to show girls that there is a place for them to learn too. In South Africa kids are 4x more likely to be aware of HIV/AIDS and Tanzanian children are more aware of how to prevent Malaria transmission. And this just seems to be the start. There are so many great programs that make such a huge measured impact.

But it’s also magical. It’s Snuffleupus and Cookie Monster and hundreds of Muppets around the world. It’s inspiring and memorable to everyone who watches. A much repeated story from my childhood is that while watching Sesame Street the power went out and my brother could not stop crying, thinking that his muppet friends had gone away forever. There is a connection to these characters and stories that goes beyond the scientific data that backs them up. These are our friends, our reflections, our teachers, and our inspirations.

Weekly Check-In

Happy Valentine’s Day weekend. I hope you have as much love in your life as I do. ❤

Volunteering

  • 4 hours Crisis Text Line

Charitable Givingnationwide-fundraiser-740x400

  • $1 – I participated in this past weekend’s Nationwide Coffee Fundraiser for the ACLU. I tried a new coffee shop in my area and although I won’t go back, I’m happy I participated. Coffee with a friend while raising a little money for a good cause, what could be better?
  • $20 Pro Seniors: O’Lucky You Grand Event – My brother is very dedicated to Pro Seniors which is an organization that provides advice, representation and justice for seniors in Ohio. Some of the prizes are Cincinnati specific but some of them are booze. It’s more about the cause but I love raffles.

Personal Kindness

  • I gave a coworker some restaurant advice. I know that seems silly to as a kindness but helping someone figure out a nice or fun place to take there family can be kind. It reminds you of things you love and good times you’ve had and hopefully it helps the person your talking to make great memories too.

Self Care

  • I knit and find it very calming. I’ve decided that I should teach myself how to crochet so I can learn to make these Octopui for Preemies. I’ve been playing around a little bit and have ordered supplies. I can’t wait. Much like being a reader, being a crafter means you have a nice be stash of books and yarn in the to-be pile.

Purple State Challenge – Washington

Welcome to the start of the #PurpleStateChallenge!

KYRS-Thin Air Community Radio

Mission:

“KYRS-Thin Air Community Radio is a volunteer-powered, non-commercial, listener-supported, community radio station in Spokane, WA serving the area with unique programming for un-served and underserved populations. Heard on 92.3 & 88.1 FM and streaming 24/7 at http://www.kyrs.org, we provide a mix of news, views, culture and music often overlooked by other media.

Thin Air Radio’s goal is to build a strong, listener-supported community radio station that empowers people, especially ethnic minorities, low-income, and other marginalized groups, to strive for a more just and sustainable world.”

Why I choose this group:

I really like this as my first choice in the Purple State Challenge because it’s emblematic of what I’m trying to do; making sure that everyone is heard. I want to blur the lines of red and blue in this country and get back to looking at people as people. KYRS does a great job of encouraging dialogues in the community. America is kind, just, and strong and KYRS is on air making sure that we all continue to hear that.

Weekly Check-In

Starting the year off with an injury has turned into a slow start for the year. I’m struggling a bit with motivation. But I’ll pull through.

Volunteering

  • 4 hours Crisis Text Line

Charitable Giving

  • $0  – Good things are coming!

Personal Kindness

  • I wrote a card this week. One of the directors in my company was retiring and we all wrote personal cards and letters to her. It feels nice to express to someone how they’ve effected you and I hope to do it more often. I have a few blank cards in my office that are dying to be sent.

Self Care

  • I started working out again after resting up and letting my injury heal. I do PIIT28  and really enjoy it. I did one round after Thanksgiving and felt a lot stronger. It’s nice to get out of bed and get on the mat.
  • It was Groundhog Day yesterday. This is one of my favorite days of the year. One, because it a holiday based on a magical fortune telling groundhog. And two, because it’s a good reason to celebrate a random day in February. I got myself my favorite foods and wished everyone I saw a happy day.
