Weekly Check-In

It’s Memorial Day. Thinking of those who lost their lives to make mine free.

It’s been a stressful time worrying about getting a new job and working through this transition. So I’ve been putting more of a focus on self-care and hoping for the best.

Volunteering

  • 2 hours – Crisis Text Line – I needed some self care so I cut back on hours

Charitable Giving

  • $25 – Up With Trees
  • 2 Shawls & a baby blanket

Personal Kindness

  • While looking for a job for myself I saw one that reminded me of a co-worker. I sent it over and he said no one had ever done something like that for him before and he got excited. It’s nice to see how appreciative he was. I also hope it helps with the job search karma.

Self Care

  • I’ve still been knitting up a storm. It’s so calming.
  • I’ve been trying to spring clean my apartment. It always feels better to be in a clean nice home.

Up With Trees

upwithtrees

Mission:

“To beautify greater Tulsa by planting trees and to create urban forestry awareness through education.”

Why I choose this group:

Sometimes we think that planting a tree is frivolous, that it doesn’t really have a huge impact when we turn on the news and see so many upsetting things. But Up With Trees knows better. Planting trees grows communities. It helps with physical and mental health. It helps people and nature. And there are dozens of studies to prove it. Spending time in nature – even just a walk down a tree lined street – can dramatically improve your well being. It isn’t frivolous, it’s vital.

I like that Up With Trees focuses on urban areas and education. You can see the passion and joy in the people of this organization. I also wanted to choose a nature related organization for Oklahoma because of it’s natural beauty that has been lost to industry and development. The environment is vital to progress and society, it’s not something we can ignore for short term gains.

Weekly Check-In

I’m back to job hunting as my current contract is almost up. This is stressful and time consuming. I hope this has a positive outcome but really I think there has to be a better process than this. The stress also comes from the financial side. A reason the Purple State Challenge has lagged. I’m not making very much now with an uncertain future and I haven’t been able to donate as much as I’d like. But I’m lucky to have an optimistic personality so I believe things will get better.

Volunteering

  • 4 hours – Crisis Text Line

Charitable Giving

Personal Kindness

  • I get compliments sometimes when I wear certain dresses or outfits to work and I did this week for a particular dress. With every compliment I received I tried to make sure I returned one. I used the compliments not just to feel confident in my appearance but as a reminder that it’s easy to compliment others. Pay it forward. I feel like I’ll now think of this dress as the pay a compliment dress.

Self Care

  • I’ve been focusing on my knitting. I have little projects that allow me to get that great feeling of control and completion that’s hard to find elsewhere. Plus I get pretty things that I donate or add to my wardrobe. It’s always fun to get a compliment and you can reply “Thanks, I made it”
  • More cleaning and errand running. Again focusing on what’s in my control to accomplish. I’m also trying to focus on doing things now that I won’t want to do once I have my fancy new job.

Angel Flight MidAtlantic

angelflight

Mission:

“Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic (AFMA) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization utilizing over 550 volunteer pilots to transport patients to specialized medical care. We are a coordinating service matching volunteer pilots willing to donate their time and aircraft to the individuals in need.”

Why I choose this group:

There are a couple of things that have been in the news lately – air travel and healthcare – so I thought this was pretty topical. Jimmy Kimmel is trending with the story of his newborn son and his statements that money shouldn’t effect care. I completely agree and I know most people do, it’s just hard to navigate the politics of making that happen. I know we can all feel powerless and unable to help sometimes. And that’s why I picked Angel Flight MA – it’s about people sharing their skills to help just a little bit. These pilots volunteer their time to get people to the care they need. It’s everyday people sharing their skills to make a big impact in someone else’s life.

We all have unique skills that we can use to make our communities better. These pilots are taking action with their skills and that is so inspiring to me. You don’t have to be a doctor or a lawyer to help. Everyone can contribute.
